This has reference to the news item ‘Teachers have key role in shaping students’ destiny’ DE June 13.
Despite acknowledging the important role teachers play in building the nation, nobody in the Governments past or present is interested to better the lot of teacher community in the State. Teachers in Jammu and Kashmir are victims of political and administrative apathy. This can be gauged from the fact that no educated youth wants to become a teacher in this State.
It is limited options elsewhere that he opts for teaching and not from his own choice. And those who have opted teaching as a profession curse the day they joined the department. The teachers neither get promotions on due time, nor they are regularized during their service period. There are principals, ZEOs, lecturers who have retired without being regularized. The transfers done in the Department are made in a shoddy manner with influential people getting choice posting and those without any connection rot in far flung areas. The Government and society must first recognize the importance of teachers only then expect something substantial from them. The teachers community in the State is a depressed lot, as no one listens to its woes.
