Rot in Geology and Mining

The Department of Geology and Mining is emerging as one organisation that needs administrative reforms urgently.  When seniors and Grade – 1 gazetted officers are sidelined, and juniors are asked to run the show, what does it indicate? It reflects nepotism and favouritism galore in the department. It is very surprising that gazetted officers have been rested and the youngsters have occupied the field. By and large, the belief is that the younger staff asked to discharge the functions of their seniors after sidelining the latter; the body of younger generations is free to handle the contracts and other works to be given to the blue-eyed boys only. If this is true then one can say there is a vast mafia at work and the Government is not aware of what sort of atrocities are perpetuated in the department. Commissioner/ Secretary Industries and Commerce, has disliked the practice of sidelining the gazetted officers and filling their place with in-charge juniors. His earlier instructions of avoiding the practice have fallen on flat ears. About  40 Class-I Gazetted officers including senior Geologists and Drilling Engineers are available with the department but many blue -eyed persons having nexus with the powerful illegal mining mafia have been offered the prime postings. Some transfers have been made but knowledgeable people consider it only eyewash. We hope the Commissioner-Secretary will see to it that this irregularity in the Geology and Mining Department is stopped and qualified and deserving people are deployed for adequate role and performance in the department.
