Rs 1458 crore earmarked for Jhelum Flood Management works in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: An amount of Rs 1458 crore has been earmarked for Jhelum Flood Management works in Kashmir valley, which witnessed the most ferocious and biggest flood in September 2014.
Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Sham Lal Chaudhary, replying to a question of Dharambir Singh Oberoi in Legislative Council, informed today that under Prime Minister’s package for the state, Rs 1458 crore has been earmarked for Jhelum Flood Management works.
The minister informed that the package includes Rs 280 crore for flood threat to river Jhelum for Phase-I.
“Rs 399.29 crore for comprehensive plan for flood management works on Jhelum Phase-I and Rs 1178 crore for Phase-II,” he said, adding the Phase-I and Phase-II contain components like land compensation, bridges and civil works and dredging of river Jhelum.
Mr Choudhary informed that dredging work of river Jhelum has already been started at two places in Srinagar and Baramulla.
He said that efforts are afoot for timely completion of dredging work so that carrying capacity of the river increases. (AGENCIES)
