SRINAGAR, Aug 10: Chairman Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement, Dr Raja Muzaffar has appealed to Chief Secretary Dr A K Mehta to take action against Municipal Council Ganderbal for unscientific dumping of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in Beehama wetland area of the Ganderbal town.
In a statement, Dr Raja Muzaffar said that instead of enforcing the MSW Rules 2016, the MC Ganderbal is itself violating the same by carrying all the municipal and hazardous waste in a mixed form and dumping the same in wetland area at Gohal which is mere 30 meters from Ganderbal Sub District Hospital.
He said that Municipal Council Ganderbal is also guilty of violating the Wetland Conservation and Management Rules 2017. He said that the municipality is earth filling the plastic waste which is itself a serious criminal act.
“The Municipal Council Ganderbal is not only violating the MSW Rules 2016 but is also violating Wetland Conservation and Management Rules of 2017 plus the Water Prevention and Control of Pollution Act 1974. I appeal to the Chief Secretary Dr A K Mehta who is also the Chairperson State Wetland Authority and Suresh Chugh, Chairman Pollution Control Committee to take strong notice of this issue. The municipal officials across J&K need to be sensitized on managing MSW plus the Govt must allocate enough funds to all ULBs to have a scientific system for waste management in place. The municipal officials are dumping the wetland waste under muck which is again a serious crime” he added.
