Srinagar, Apr 21: Police today said it has arrested a ‘rumour monger’ from Handwara area of Kupwara district who had spread rumours about death of a boy earlier this week during student protests.
A police official said a rumour monger Ishfaq Hussain Hajam of Astan Pura village of Langate in Handwara was arrested by police today. “It is pertinent to mention here that he on April 18 when students all over valley protested against Pulwama episode, spread a rumour that one person has died in Sopore.
“This rumour had a recursive effect in Sopore and situation became volatile in Sopore,” the police official said. Confirming his arrest, SDPO Handwara Shabir Khan said Ishfaq had spread the rumour through a WhatsApp group. “We have booked him in suitable IT Act,” the top cop said and warned of strict action against the rumour mongers.
