Russia, China veto US-drafted resolution that stops short of demanding ceasefire in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 22 : Russia and China on Friday blocked a US-drafted UN Security Council resolution that stopped short of calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

Eleven UNSC members voted in favor, three against and one abstained.

The draft “determines the imperative of an immediate and sustained ceasefire” but falls short of demanding it.

It also “unequivocally supports ongoing international diplomatic efforts” to secure a ceasefire in connection with the release of all remaining hostages. In addition, it condemns “all acts of terrorism, including the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023.”

Russia criticized the draft for its failure to clearly call for a ceasefire in Gaza. The document contains “all the past distortions and unacceptable one-sided ‘condemnations’,” representing “standard American deception,” the Russian mission to the UN said on Thursday. (UNI)
