SAMBA, Apr 25: Old and rusted ammunition was found buried under the soil in Ramgarh sector of Samba district on Friday.
Officials said the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel of the 13th Battalion were on routine patrolling near Kamour forward village, close to the International Border, when they noticed suspicious items in an open field.
On digging, they recovered several 7.62 mm LMG rounds along with an old metallic box, the officials said.
They said the BSF immediately informed the local police.
Accordingly, a team from Ramgarh Police Station reached the spot and began investigation, they said.
Police sources said the ammunition appears to be old and likely left over from a previous war, but all possibilities are being looked into.
Later, the bomb disposal squad of Jammu and Kashmir Police safely defused the recovered ammunition at a secure location.
Meanwhile, authorities have increased vigil in the area.
