RuTAG-JU & HESCO organize workshop on J&K Himalaya

JAMMU, June 26: Jammu University chapter of RuTAG organized a two day workshop on theme “Science, Technology and Community Wisdom: J&K Himalaya”, in collaboration with The Himalayan Environment Studies and Conservation Organization (HESCO), Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The workshop was inaugurated by JU Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, who dwelt in detail about the need to conserve our natural resources. He said that development should go hand in hand with conservation.
Prof I A Hamal, Vice Chancellor, BGSBU, Rajouri, who was the guest of honour, spoke about the initiatives taken up by BGSBU Rajouri in recharging of springs.
The highlight of the Inaugural function was thought provoking address of Padamshree  Dr  Anil Joshi, founder HESCO. He emphasized on synergy between different stakeholders of the Himalayan region.
Dr  Ketaki Bapat Scientist from Principal Scientific Advisor’s Office, GoI,  highlighted the role of RuTAG and initiatives taken up by PSA in catalyzing various institutes towards rural technology development.
The keynote address was delivered by Prof  A K  Koul, Dean Academic Affairs, BGSBU, Rajouri. He emphasized in creating a citizen science group where symbiotic association among various stakeholders would help in resolving many of the core issues.
Prof  S  Risam, Officiating Vice Chancellor, SKUAST, Jammu and  A K  Sahu, CEO, SMVDU also graced the occasion.
Two technical sessions were conducted on the first day wherein  Major G S  Jamwal  and Dr  Y S  Bedi, Chief Scientist CSIR, IIIM, Jammu spoke.
RuTAG is a synergizing and catalyzing mechanism to develop and disseminate technologies for rural areas. It addresses need based up-gradation of technologies with the help of IITs and local NGOs. Seven RuTAG Centres are established at various IITs. University of Jammu is the first University of the country to have RuTAG Chapter.
