JAMMU, July 25: Shiromani Akali Dal, Jammu has taken strong notice of Govt of India’s proposal wherein the reservation for various communities of J&K have been proposed for the State Legislature.
A spokesman of SAD said that as per Govt of India proposal, two seats have been reserved for Kashmiri Pandits among others, which is a welcome step. However, at the same time the Sikh community has been ignored by denying the legitimate right to be represented in the State Legislature.
It is worthwhile to mentioning that the population of both the communities is almost equal which is Circa 3.5 lakhs. Moreover, the sacrifices of Sikh community for safeguarding the state boundaries in 1947 and maintaining the communal harmony of the erstwhile J&K state during turbulent times are well known to everybody. It’s disheartening to notice this step motherly treatment for micro minority.
“We have approached the Prime Minister, Home Minister and Delimitation Commission wherein we were assured that the Sikh community’s interests will be safeguarded at appropriate time. Surprisingly, time and again we have been betrayed,” he added.
SAD has appealed the Govt of India and J&K UT authorities to accommodate the Sikh community on the pattern of Kashmiri Pandits by keeping two seats reserved, one each from Kashmir valley and Jammu division.
Shiromani Akali Dal strongly advocated the reservation of Sikh community in the State Legislature so that issues and problems faced by Sikh community could be highlighted and solved.
