Sir,
I am writing to draw your attention to a serious concern in our community: how safe do women feel in Jammu? Women here still face grave and serious safety concerns in both public and private spaces notwithstanding all the great progress made lately. This requires immediate attention from local authorities as well as all those who would want to see Jammu as a safe, vibrant city for all.
Reports of harassment, stalking, and violence towards women are too common. Women never feel safe while walking alone, especially at night, and there is a good reason for it. As a student from another state, I met with an incident that changed my perspective regarding Jammu being a safe city for women. Although a police presence may be maintained in many areas, often insufficient street lighting, CCTV coverage, and police response create an uninhibited sense of insecurity which may present restrictions on mobility and choice.
Moreover, there should be some form of awareness and sensitivity training, especially for officers in the law enforcement profession, because incidents should receive the gravity they deserve. Community-based initiatives such as hosting self-defense workshops, creating awareness among various groups, and holding school workshops help promote a safer and more respectable environment for all.
This is not just a women’s issue, but a concern of the whole society. Practical steps with such thought processes will help make Jammu a safe place to live for women and strengthen the community in general.
I would love to bring this issue to the fore, and I do hope that our leaders, law enforcement, and fellow citizens take meaningful steps toward ensuring the safety of our women of Jammu.
