Saffron party no more pariah in Kashmir

*BJP remains 2nd on 2 seats, 3rd on 4
others; Gurez lost by a slight margin

JAMMU, Oct 10: Assembly Elections 2024 in Jammu and Kashmir turned out to be historic for the Bharatiya Janta Party not only in terms of its best ever performance in respect of winning number of seats and securing highest vote share among all political parties, but also registering noticeable presence in Kashmir.

Even as the party failed to open account in the Valley, the saffron party got votes in thousands in several constituencies while remaining second on two seats, third on four seats and fourth on three other seats.
Out of total 47 Assembly constituencies in Kashmir valley, the party had fielded candidates on 19 seats and secured an average of striking 7.53 percent vote share.
In Gurez, BJP’s Faqir Mohd Khan lost to National Conference candidate Nazir Ahmad Khan with a slight margin of 1032 votes only. In a multi-cornered contest, BJP candidate secured 40.34 percent votes (7246) while NC candidate got 8378 votes.
Similarly, in Habbakadal Assembly constituency, BJP candidate Ashok Kumar Bhat secured 15.08 percent votes and stood second. He was defeated by Shamim Firdous of National Conference. There were total 16 candidates, including that of PDP, Apni Party, Awami National Conference and Independents in the fray. However, security deposits of all the candidates, except of NC and BJP, were forfeited as they failed to secure minimum required vote percentage.
Besides, BJP candidates secured third position in Anantnag West constituency, Rajpora, Shangus-Anantnag and Srigufwara. In Anantnag, Channapora and Charar-I-Sharief, the party was on fourth place.
In Anantnag-West Assembly constituency, BJP candidate Mohd Rafiq Wani secured 6574 votes (10.61 percent) and stood third after NC and PDP , while in Rajpora, BJP’s Arsheed Ahmad Bhat was polled 5584 (10.44 percent) votes, third highest after NC and PDP. In Shangus -Anantnag, BJP candidate Vir Ji Saraf was polled 1988 votes while in Srigufwara, BJP’s Sofi Yusuf got 3716 votes.
In Shopian Assembly constituency, BJP candidate Javid Ahmad Qadri registered an impressive presence by securing 6895 votes (11. 6 percent).
As per the Election Commission data, BJP secured 4173 (7.26 percent) votes in Kokernag, 3281 (8.91 percent) votes in Lal Chowk, 2973 (7.2 percent) votes in Karnah, 1508 votes (5.37 percent) in Anantnag, 1196 (1.61 percent) in Bandipora, 722 (2.84 percent) in Channapora, 1779 (2. 4 percent) in Charar-I-Sharief, 479 (2.08 percent) in Eidgah, 1750 (2.39 percent) in Handwara, 1605 (2.35 percent) in Khansahib, 1024 (1.2 percent) in Sonawari and 957 (2.11 percent) in Pampore.
