JAMMU, June 17: The Samooh Theatre staged Mahesh Dattani’s award winning play ‘Final Solutions’ in Jammu and Kashmir Theatre Festival at Chandigarh organized by North Zone Culture Center Patiala.
The English Play has been adapted in Hindustani and directed by Ravinder Sharma.
On the occasion, Prof Saubhagya Vardhan, Director North Zone Culture Center presented welcome address and conducted the proceedings of the programme.
Prof Navdeep Kour, Chairman Department of Indian Theatre, Punjab University, Chandigarh was the chief guest while Kamal Arora, Chairman Sangeet Natak Academy, Chandigarh presided over the function.
‘Final Solutions’ has a powerful contemporary resonance and it addresses an issue of utmost concern to our society, i.e. the issue of communalism. The play presents different shades of the communalist attitude prevalent among Hindus and Muslims in its attempt to underline the stereotypes and clichés influencing the collective sensibility of one community against another. What distinguishes this work from other plays written on the subject is that it is neither sentimental in its appeal nor simplified in its approach.
It advances the objective candor of a social scientist while presenting a mosaic of diverse attitudes towards religious identity that often plunges the country into inhuman strife. Yet the issue is not moralized, as the demons of communal hatred are located not out in the street but deep within us.
The play moves from the partition to the present day communal riots.
The actors who performed in play were Suneedhi Sharma as Daksha, Nikita Abrol as Hardika, Pallavi Jamwal as Aruna, Aashima Dutta as Smeeta, Ravinder Sharma as Ramnik, Chetan Charak as Bobby and Sandeep Thakur as Javed.
The main highlight of the play was its chorus who maintained the tempo of the play throughout. Their movements, formations and speech made play more interesting. The members of chorus were Samdhish, Shubham Singh, Abhishake Sharma, Anjali Sharma, Disha Bhagat, Tarun Charak, Nainsi and Rohan Sharma.
Music was arranged by Surinder Manhas and operated by Sandeep Manhas.. Yeshvinder Baliand Shubam dealt with the make-up. Light were designed by Ravinder Sharma and operated by Pankaj Sharma while Anita Chandpuri looked after the management of whole play. Rohit Bains did the choreography of the play.
