JAMMU, Aug 14: An impressive, first-ever Sanskrit rally was taken out in the City of Temples today by the students and staff of Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Shri Ranbir Campus, Kot Bhalwal, Jammu.
The rally commenced from Indira Chowk and after passing through Shri Raghunath Temple Chowk, Raghunath Bazar and City Chowk areas of the old city, concluded at Shri Ranbireshwar Temple.
Before flagging off the rally, Principal, Prof Ramanuja Devanathan said that the purpose of the rally was to rekindle the public interest in Sanskrit which is one of the oldest and the most respected and loved languages of the world. He said that contribution of the ancient scholars from Jammu and Kashmir is very significant and occupies a place of pride in Sanskrit literature. However, such glorious tradition of the State was gradually withering away due to official and Government apathy, he regretted and expressed the hope that the rally would bring about a renaissance of Sanskrit in the region and inspire the people of Jammu and Kashmir to re-establish Sanskrit in the region in all its former glory.
The students and the staff of the Campus, many of them wearing traditional dresses, were chanting slogans such as “Jayatu Sanskritam, Jayatu Bharatam” etc. They were also holding placards highlighting the significance of Sanskrit language and literature.
In the afternoon, the valedictory function of the Sanskrit Week celebrations was held at the Kot Bhalwal premises of the Campus. Prof Sudesh Kumar Sharma, Information Commissioner, Jammu and Kashmir was the chief guest on the occasion, whereas renowned Sanskrit scholar and former Head of the Department of Sanskrit, University of Jammu, Prof Ram Pratap Vedalankar was the guest of honour.
