Santosh Chowdhary assumes charge as MoS Health

NEW DELHI, June 19:  Santosh Chowdhary today assumed charge as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare and said she will concentrate on fulfilling the government’s plan for the health sector.

“I shall try to implement all schemes of the UPA government relating to health sector for the benefit of the people as the Minister of State for Health & Family Welfare,” she said.

An MP from Hoshiarpur constituency of Punjab, Chowdhary hails from Sanawar in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh.

She was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Phillaur constituency of Punjab in 1992 and was re-elected from the there in 1999. She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Hoshiarpur in 2009.

Chowdhary has held several high level posts in the government of Punjab and the central government. She was the Chairperson of Punjab Public Service Commission (1980-86) and General Secretary of the Mahila Congress in Punjab in 1986.

She has also served as vice president in Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee and All India Mahila Congress.

She was also Executive Member of Congress for two terms in Parliament, Member in the committee on the empowerment of women. She was also the chairperson in the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, Government of India between 2004-2009. (PTI)
