Sarabjit slips into coma

NEW DELHI :  Indian national Sarabjit, who is on death row in a Lahore jail, today slipped into coma after being  attacked in the jail premises yesterday.
According to doctors attending on Sarabjit, he has been put on ventilator and was receiving Intravenous drip, responding to some stimuli at times.
The Indian High Commission is in regular touch with the the Medical Board that has been constituted to take care of Sarabjit’s treatment, the Ministry of External Affairs official said here.
Several medical tests have been conducted, and doctors, who were carrying out trauma control, were awaiting stabilisation in his condition before conducting further tests.
Meanwhile, officials of India’s High Commission were at Jinnah Hospital in Lahore.
Sarabjit was attacked by fellow prisoners when he was being brought out of his cell to be moved to a more secure cell.
Sarabjit’s family said he had been facing death threat from prison inmates after the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and had intimated to the jail authorities through his lawyer.
He was convicted for his alleged involvement in bomb attacks in Punjab in which 14 people had been killed in 1990.
He had sought mercy but his petitions had been rejected by the Pakistan government.
However, the People’s Party led government had put off Sarabjit’s execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
According to Sarabjit’s family, he has been wrongly implicated in the case, and had only inadvertently strayed into the Pakistan territory.
