JAMMU, Dec 18: MLA Jammu West and senior BJP leader Sat Sharma (CA) was likely to be appointed as new State BJP chief on December 20 as he has emerged as consensus candidate for the post.
After the completion of organizational elections on booth, Mandal and district levels, the stage is now all set for the election of successor to outgoing Party president of the State BJP, Jugal Kishore Sharma and according to sources close to the Party, Sat Sharma has emerged a consensus candidate for the post.
However, the formal announcement will be made on Sunday by the Party national general secretary, Sham Jujju who has been deputed by the High Command as observer.
The senior BJP leaders from the State including the outgoing president, Ministers from the Party and office bearers as well as district presidents and general secretaries will be present during the meeting, sources added.
Sources said though there were many contenders for the post of president who besides Mr Sharma included Party general secretary and RSS ideologue Dr Narinder Singh, senior leaders Chander Mohan Sharma, Yudhvir Sethi and MLC Vibodh Gupta. However, the State unit had finally cleared the names of Sat Sharma and Dr Singh only.
Though Dr Narinder Singh also emerged as a strong contender but being a new entrant in the Party, Sat Sharma became an ultimate choice, sources said.
Mr Sharma will succeed Jugal Kishore whose three year term as Party chief has already come to an end. There is a tradition in BJP to hold the organizational elections after every three years. Mr Jugal was elected the president of the Party, in 2012 and he had succeeded Shamsher Singh Manhas, the then president and presently MP Rajya Sabha.
Sources said earlier Party had announced election for the post of State president will be held on November 20 but the process was delayed as the election process in the districts was incomplete for certain reasons and Parliament was also in session due to which the senior leaders were preoccupied with it.
As per BJP Constitution, the election of State president is held after completion of three tier election process on booth, Mandal and district levels. The Party sends a communiqué to High Command of holding elections for the State president after the election process in 50 percent of the districts is complete and in case of J&K by now this process has been completed in 20 districts out of 22 which is round 80 percent.
