Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘Save Dogri signature campaign’ published in this paper. Language and culture are intertwined and for the preservation of culture preservation of language is a pre-requisite.
This initiative by “Swabhiman with regard to Dogri language is laudable.
India, so diverse culturally and linguistically wherein languages change within the distance of a km is encriching because of this diversity only. Languages work towards increasing the influence of cultural harmony. In past few decades local languages all over India in general have suffered.
Linguistic integeration should always take into account the fact that the local languages and to be preserved in their true form to reap the benefit of cultural diversity that our country presents us with.
Dogri as a language is not just rich in culture and literature but is also easy on the tongue. Its sweetness inspires poets and musicians. It happens to be not just the language in major parts of Jammu division but in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh also.
An excellent beginning can be made by introducing Dogri at the school level. The Govt of Jammu and Kashmir needs to step in and restore Dogri to its pristime glory.
Yours etc….
