Saving Devika

Sir,
This has reference to the Sunday Magazine article ‘Devika, the river of faith’ DE May 7.
The article was quite informative, and the author deserves kudos for giving a historical background of this holy rivers.
But, the condition this river of faith is presently in, warrants attention not from the Government, but from people who have faith in it. These people should come forward with a mission to restore its past glory. People should not expect Government to do everything which they themselves can do and should do.
It is the duty of the people to preserve the cultural heritage they have inherited from their ancestor. They are so many places in and around Udhampur town which are presently in dilapidated condition. A little effort by people at community level can bring them back to life. Preservation and maintenance is in the hands of the people, and they should come forward for such jobs. Even if a Government restores a place or a monument, to its original shape, it is people who have to take care of them on regular basis.
Yours etc….
