Sir,
In his third’Mann Ki Baat’programme on radio, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rightly termed drug menace as a ‘ national pain’ and called for sincere efforts on the part of society and the government to work together to combat this menace.Drugs, indeed, are bringing destruction and devastation in the lives of many people, especially the youth of our country. They take to drugs just for thrill and enjoyment but soon become so addicted that they find it difficult to come out of the quagmire of drugs. We often read reports of young boys and girls having been arrested in rave parties and being under the influence of drugs.Drugs may thrill them for sometime but ultimately it is these drugs which destroy and devastate their lives leaving them nowhere.Drugs affect our nervous system so much that drug addicts fail to think clearly and differentiate between what is right and what is wrong.A time comes when the drug addicts can miss their meals but not drugs with the result that the members of his family have to pass through a severe trauma.
Thus the need of the hour is to sensitise our youth to shun the path of drugs and thus, lead a healthier life. Those found involved in supplying drugs need to be severly punished under law to prevent drug peddling.Parents too need to be more friendly towards their children so that the children can open their hearts to the former. They ought to keep a constant vigil on the behaviour of their children and ensure that they donot tread the wrong path. They should take some time out of their busy schedule and spend it with their children to provide them a feeling of love and sense of security. Counselling sessions for sensitising the youth against the ill effects of drugs should be frequently held in schools, colleges and universities and children should be guided not to fall a prey to drug menace. The Prime Minister has aptly cautioned the youth against spending money on drugs as their hard earned money may be used for carrying out terrorist and subversive activities against their own motherland, which they would never wish for.
Yours etc…..
Ashok Sharma,
