SC asks states, Centre to protect North-Easterners

NEW DELHI : Taking serious note of the violent attacks on the people belonging to the North-East, the Supreme Court today issued notices to the Centre and all the states in the country.
On a petition seeking directions to the authorities to set up a mechanism to protect the people from the North-East, a bench, comprising Justices P Sathasivam and Ranjan Gogoi, granted four weeks time to the states to respond.
The apex court also directed the states to set up a mechanism or machinery to protect and safeguard people hailing from the North-East.
The petitions are the fall-out of the killing of 19-year old Nido Taniam, a student from Arunachal Pradesh, by some shopkeepers in South Delhi.
The role of Delhi police in the incident is also under CBI scanner.
The Centre has already ordered a CBI probe into the killing of Nido, son of a Congress MLA from Arunachal Pradesh, who died of severe beating by Lajpat Nagar shopkeeper after he protested against racial remarks.
The apex court has strongly disapproved the racial discrimination against the people from North-East, particularly against students. (AGENCIES)
