JAMMU, May 23: The SC cell of J&K PCC today stressed for the urgent need for a caste-based census in Jammu and Kashmir.
In this regard a meeting of the SC, ST, and OBC United Front was held here today.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Madan Lal Chalotra, Chairman of the OBC Department at J&K PCC.
Chalotra kicked off the meeting by stressing the importance of a caste census for achieving social justice in Jammu and Kashmir.
He elaborated that a caste census is not just about reservations; it will shed light on the myriad issues faced by marginalized communities. This includes understanding the number of people living on the margins of society, the types of jobs they hold, and their living conditions.
Chalotra emphasized that such comprehensive data is crucial for creating policies that genuinely address the needs of these communities.
Shamsher Bhagat, Vice Chairman of the cell, emphasized that a caste census would provide the detailed data necessary for policymakers to develop better policies and strategies.
He argued that this data would also facilitate more informed and rational discussions about sensitive issues, which is essential for fostering social harmony and equity.
Jeet Raj, Congress leader urged a shift in the perception of caste.
He stated that caste should not be viewed solely as an issue concerning disadvantaged or poor people. Instead, it’s important to acknowledge the ways in which caste benefits certain communities and to document these advantages as well. This broader understanding of caste would help in creating more balanced and fair policies.
