NEW DELHI, July 24: The Supreme Court today directed the Union government and all the states to install CCTV cameras in all the prisons across the country.
A division bench comprising Justices Tirath Singh Thakur and R Banumathi, in their interim order, said CCTV cameras should be installed in all the prisons within one year but not later than two years.
Criminal lawyer Rakesh Kumar Singh said the interim order of the apex court was a very good step to ensure the fact that the convicts and the inmates lodged in jails across the country could not escape.
“The jail inmates or convicts cannot flee from jails. The CCTVs will be effective in dealing with them. It is a very good step,” Mr Singh told UNI.
The court also said every police station should have at least two women constables.
Delivering the interim order, Justice Thakur said all state governments must fill up the vacancies in the state Human Rights Commissions within three months time.
The court also directed all the Union Territories to set up state Human Rights Commission, noting that none of them, including Delhi, have their own state Human Rights Commission.
The apex court passed the order while deciding a PIL by one Dilip K. Basu seeking prison reforms and filling of the vacancies in the state Human Rights Commissions. (UNI)
