SC doubles ECC on diesel vehicle entering Delhi

NEW DELHI :  In an important ruling, the Supreme Court today  doubled the Environment Compensation Charges (ECC) on diesel vehicles entering the national capital with immediate effect.
A three-judge bench of  the Apex court, comprising Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and justice R Banumathi passed the order after hearing from environmentalists, the Central Government and other parties.
The top court said those diesel vehicles which are having no Delhi registration number plate could not enter Delhi through National Highway 1, 2 and 8.  It also said that those diesel vehicles with 2000 cc power could not be registered from January 1, 2016 till March 31.
The court ordered all these measures to reduce the increasing level of air pollution in the national capital and the NCR region. (UNI)
