NEW DELHI, Nov 11:
The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Central Government and sought a detailed reply within four weeks’ time in the Kohinoor case.
A bench of the Apex Court, headed by Chief Justice of India, Tirath Singh Thakur, sought the reply from the Centre within four weeks.
The Petition, which was filed by the NGC, Heritage Bengal, sought to bring back Kohinoor diamond from England to India as it belonged to India. Government should use diplomatic channel to bring it back.
The Government maintains that the diamond was gifted to the Queen, on the other hand NGO says that the diamond was not gifted to the Queen, rather it was stolen.
Earlier a similar petition was filed by one Nafees Ahmed. In that case SC had merely asked the Solicitor General to explain what the Government was doing on this. Now a formal notice has been issued. (UNI)
