SC notice to TN Govt on 69 pc quota for OBCs, SC/ST

NEW DELHI, Sept 10:
The Supreme Court today issued notices to the state of Tamil Nadu on a petition challenging the state government notification providing 69 per cent reservation to OBCs and SC/STs in government jobs.
The apex court has given two weeks time to the state government to respond.
According to the petitioner, the top court has fixed upper limit for providing reservations at 50 per cent and no reservation can be provided beyond it and, therefore the decision of the state government to provide 69 per cent reservation violates the Supreme Court judgement in Mandal Commission case.
According to the Supreme Court ruling in Indira Sawhney case which is also known as Mandal Commission case the creamy layer among the OBCs has to be excluded from the benefits of quota. (UNI)
