SC wants Parliament to discuss CBI autonomy

NEW DELHI, July 10:
The Supreme Court today expressed its  desire that Parliament should discuss the issue of autonomy to CBI   and amend the law to liberate CBI from the influence of the  government.
A three-judge bench comprising Justices RM Lodha, Madan B Lokur and Kurien Joseph made the observation while considering the affidavit of the Centre giving details of the steps being taken by the government to make CBI independent.
The Government in its affidavit has said it was proposed that the CBI director shall be selected by a three-member collegium comprising PM, Leader of opposition in Lok Sabha and the CJI. CBI director cannot be transferred without the recommendation of the panel.
According to the affidavit, the CBI director will have a minimum tenure of two years and can be removed by the President of India only on the recommendation by CVC.
The court has been seeking to insulate the CBI from the influence of the executive.
