Screening camp for cervical, breast cancers conducted

JAMMU, Jan 15: A cervical cancer and breast cancer screening camp was organized today at Government Hospital, Sarwal.
The camp was organized by Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Section under the expert supervision of Directorate of Health Services, Jammu. The camp was inaugurated by J&K Nodal officer NCD, Dr Sumir Kaul and Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, Dr Rajeev Sharma.
The screening tests involved breast examination and VIAA (Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid) method which comes under population based screening programme where common masses are being screened for hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and cancer.
Forty ASHAs from Dansal, Kot Bhalwal, Akhnoor and Bishnah were screened in the camp and out of them nine cases were found positive. They were referred to Government Hospital Gandhi Nagar, Jammu for Colposcopy and further management.
On the occasion, training were imparted to doctors from Block Bhalwal, Akhnoor and Bishnah by Dr Samita Bhat (Gynae Cancer Surgeon, Government Hospital, Gandhi Nagar) and doctors will further screen the common masses in their respective zones.
Cervical Cancer is the second most common cancer found in Indian women. The current estimates indicate 67, 500 deaths annually in India which accounts to nearly 1/5th of global cervical cancer deaths. The common signs and symptoms usually ignored by the women are bleeding between periods, longer menstrual periods, post menopausal bleeding, etc.
