An anti-militancy operation was launched Sunday evening at Zaloora, Gujjarpati area of Sopore, by joint forces during which a hideout was busted.
Police said during a cordon and a search operation (CASO), the fire was observed from inside and the area was cordoned off.
Official sources said a soldier who was part of the advance team of the joint forces was injured in the initial exchange of fire. The soldier was moved to the medical facility, and his condition is stated to be critical.
There is, however, so far no official word on the injury to the soldier during the operation.
Official sources said a tight cordon was maintained in the area during the night, and searches by the joint forces were resumed early this morning.
“There has been no fresh contact with terrorists, and the search operation is underway,” they said.
On late Sunday, the Army’s Srinagar-based Chinar Corps said the operation was carried out after receiving an intelligence input regarding suspicious activities.
The anti-militancy operation is being carried out at a time when security has been stepped up across Kashmir ahead of the Republic Day celebrations.
During a recent security review meeting, Kashmir Inspector General of Police V. K. Birdi instructed officers to maintain a high level of alertness. (Agencies)
