Death toll in Srinagar attack rises to 2

SRINAGAR, Feb 8: A day after militant attack in Srinagar in which two carpenters were killed last evening, security around minority clusters have been tightened today.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, VK Birdi, and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, VK Bidhuri co-chaired a security review meeting that was attended by Deputy Commissioners and SSPs of Kashmir valley.

A police spokesman in a statement said that security arrangements were reviewed in respect of minority clusters and other critical areas in wake of recent developments.
“All the participants briefed about elaborative security measures taken in this regard. They briefed that security measures in these clusters are reviewed and stands beefed up to ensure secure environment,” he said.
He added that the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir stressed upon the participants that there shall be efforts by magistracy along with Police to ensure secure and congenial environment.
The spokesman said that the IGP impressed the participants to remain ever vigilant along with their security force counterpart and constantly review the arrangements to refine the responses and device in-genuine ways to prevent such attempts.
The meeting besides the DC’s and SSPs was attended by DIGs of all the ranges, SSP PCR Kashmir, SP South City Srinagar and SP Cargo.
In the meantime, an official said that Police today rounded up several persons in connection with the killing of two carpenters from Amritsar, Punjab, as part the investigations into the attack.
One of the victims critically injured in last evening’s attack in Srinagar succumbed to injuries this morning.
Rohit Mashi, who was rushed to SMHS hospital along with another victim, Amritpal, following a militant attack, couldn’t survive his injuries.
Militants opened fire on Amritpal and Rohit last evening, resulting in Amritpal’s immediate demise on the spot, while Rohit succumbed to his injuries this morning.
An official said that these carpenters arrived from Punjab only yesterday after over two months. He said that they are looking into who informed the militants about their return which ultimately led to the attack.
The official said that they had information about the militant module trying to strike in the city and had carried out searches in the old city area earlier this week.
In the meantime, dozens of people this evening took out a candle march in Hazratbal area of Srinagar condemning the killing of the two non-locals.
One of the protesters said: “We are fed up with terrorism and it should be ended now. We have seen enough of it during last several decades.” He said that the victim families know the real pain.
Similar protest was taken this evening in Kupwara town against the attack. The protesters expressed solidarity with the families of the carpenters.
The protesters said that people want to live in peace and harmony. They said that such unfortunate incidents should not take place as every human life is precious.
