Seminar & capacity building workshop on ‘Consumer Protection’ begins at CUJ

JAMMU, May 2: National seminar and capacity building workshop on `Consumer Protection and Welfare’ began today at Central University of Jammu, focusing on the contemporary issues.
The four-day event, sponsored by Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, GOI, commenced with an impressive inaugural session, presided over by Prof Ashok Aima, Vice Chancellor CUJ, who stressed on the pressing need of consumer protection as a critical component of any emerging economy. He stated that after digital revolution the ways to do business has changed dramatically and therefore vulnerability of consumers has increased many folds. Keeping this context in perspective, he appreciated the Department of MBA (HRM & OB) for conducting an event on this thematic argument.
President State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (SCDRC) and former Justice, Sunil Hali was the chief guest on the occasion and he apprised the audience about consumer laws and their practicability.
Prof Amitabh Kundu, Fellow at Research and Information System for developing countries, former Prof Dean at JNU, was the key note speaker. He highlighted the economic inequalities between developing and developed countries. His presentation emphasised statistics on culture of market and need for protecting Indian consumer base. Sita Ram Meena, Director, Department of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, GOI, also spoke on the occasion.
The seminar and workshop is being conducted under the aegis of project sanctioned by Ministry of Consumer Affairs to Dr Gowhar Rasool, Assistant Professor, Department of HRM & OB, CUJ.
Earlier, Prof Jaya Bhasin, Dean School of Business Studies, apprised that the seminar is being attended by representatives from CAPD, Legal Metrology, from sister Universities, colleges and schools. She also informed that the event shall be conducted at two levels. The first two days will be a national seminar where plenary discussions and technical sessions shall be conducted followed by a two day capacity building workshop by resource persons of national repute.
The proceedings of the day were conducted by Dr Neelika Arora, Assistant Professor, CUJ, and vote of thanks was given by Anjali Pathania, Assistant Professor, CUJ.
The Inaugural session was followed by panel discussion with eminent panelists including Prof V P Magotra, Prof Dipankar Sen Gupta, SSP M Y Kichloo, Amar Singh, Joint Controller, Legal Metrology Department. Later in the day, SSP Kichloo made an impressive presentation on cyber crimes which was followed by technical sessions where around 13 research papers were presented by scholars.
