JAMMU, May 12: With the arrest of cricketer turned robber, Jammu Police today claimed to have solved series of four sensational robberies in City West Sub-division of Jammu.
The accused, identified as Nitin Mehra of Kailash Nagar, Talab Tillo, was arrested this afternoon from Pathankote area on specific inputs by the special team, informed SSP Jammu Atul Goel while addressing a hurriedly called press conference where the accused also paraded before the media persons.
“The accused confessed to have committed the robberies that took place on May 10 at Prof Sunil Uppal’s residence at Green Avenue, on April 7 at Dr Yudhishter Gupta’s Suvidha Nursing Home, on February 7 at S S Lehar’s house at Bakshi Nagar and on January 16 in the house of Sunil Mahajan near Canal,” Mr Goel said adding that a dummy gun, Bajaj Chetak scooter bearing registration number JK02R-1192 along with some robbed gold ornaments have been recovered from the accused.
CCTV footage from the camera installed in Prof Uppal’s house, which was struck by the accused on May 10, helped Police to identify the robber and arrest him.
“The accused was a professional cricketer and had represented J&K State in Under-19 and Under-22 cricket tournaments,” the SSP informed adding that Nitin Mehra was also one of the probable for Ranji Trophy.   The Police is investigating the matter and trying to find out any links with any group, Mr Goel added.
SP City Yougal Manhas and SHO Bakshi Nagar Dilip Singh were also present in the news conference.
