NEW DELHI, Aug 28: Family members of APJ Abdul Kalam today urged the Government to set up a national centre for knowledge discovery in the memory of the former President at Rajaji Marg here, where he was staying till his death last month.
Kalam’s grand nephews Sheik Dawood and APJ M Sheik Saleem today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and handed over a letter from the former President’s elder brother APJ M Maraikayar addressed to the Prime Minister.
The letter urged the PM to set up ‘Kalam National Centre for Knowledge Discovery’ at 10, Rajaji Marg, the residence where Kalam stayed after his stint at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The letter said the Government could choose any other place of its choice in New Delhi for the proposed centre where youth, students and others can share knowledge from the large collection of books and other material belonging to late Kalam.
The family, while thanking the Home Minister and the Centre for extending their support during the funeral of Kalam, also requested that state honours be extended at his memorial at Rameshwaram on his birth anniversary on October 15 and death anniversary on July 27 every year. (PTI)
