Severe cold in J&K, Valley temp remains below freezing point

SRINAGAR/JAMMU, Dec 31: Kashmir and many parts of Jammu reeled under cold wave conditions today as minimum temperatures across the Valley stayed several degrees below the freezing point, while at least eight trains arrived late in Jammu due to dense fog in the northern region.
Cold wave conditions continued as the minimum temperature settled far below freezing point at most places in Kashmir today and fog returned to the parts of the Valley after a day’s respite.
Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.4°C against minus 2.8°C the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal for this time of the year.
Qazigund recorded a minimum of minus 2.6°C against minus 2.0°C the previous night. The minimum temperature was 0.3°C below normal for the town.
Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 3.4°C against minus 4.1°C the previous night and it was 1.8°C above normal for the resort.
Kokernag recorded a minimum of minus 1.4°C against minus 1.3°C the previous night and the temperature was above normal by 1.3°C for the place.
Kupwara recorded a low of minus 3.8°C against minus 2.3°C the previous night and it was 1.3°C below normal there.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 3.5°C against minus 2.5°C the previous night and the temperature was 2.7°C above normal for the skiing resort.
Kashmir valley is under ‘Chillai-Kalan’, the 40-day harsh period of winter, which will end on January 30. However, it does not mean an end to the winter. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
Weatherman has predicted the possibility of light snow over higher reaches during the evening/night of December 31.
He said from January 1-3, the weather is expected to be dry. From January 4-5, he said, generally cloudy and dry weather is expected. “Overall no significant weather activity is expected till January 5.”
Meanwhile, Jammu also experienced further sharp fall in temperature. The city of temples recorded 14.6 degree Celsius temperature today as compared to yesterday’s 18.0 degree C.
Katra recorded a minimum temperature of 8.6 degree C, Bhaderwah 1.4 degrees, Banihal 0.0 degree C, Batote town 4.0 degree and Kathua 7.8 degree C today.
Yatra to Katra Mata Vaishnodevi remained smooth as weather was fair in the area on Sunday.
Meanwhile, at least eight trains arrived late at Jammu Station due to dense fog in the Northern region, a Northern Railway spokesman said.
He said Puja Express arrived 12 hours late today, Malwa Exp and Shalimar Exp late by 7 hours, Tata Puri Express late by 4 hours; Shari Sjakti Exp, Hemkund, Jammu Mail and Sarvodya late by two hours while Utter Sampark Kranti arrived about 30 minutes late. The departure of Puja Express train was delayed by seven hours at Jammu Station.
The air traffic at Jammu airport by and large remained smooth except little delay of a few flights during morning hours. The weather improved after 10 am.
