NEW DELHI, June 9: Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday remembered tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his death anniversary and paid tributes to him.
The Defence Minister tweeted, ”On the death anniversary of Birsa Munda, I remember him and pay my regards.”
Mr Shah also took to microblogging site and said, ”Bhagwan Birsa munda fought with Britishers to save tribal culture and conscience. He will always be remembered for his work. I salute him on this day.”
Munda was born on November 15, 1875, at Ulihatu in Bengal Presidency, now in the Khunti district of Jharkhand, on a Thursday, and hence named after that day, according to the then prevalent Munda custom.
He spearheaded an Indian tribal religious Millenarian movement that arose in the tribal belt of modern-day Bihar Delhi and Jharkhand in the late 19th century, during the British Raj, thereby making him an important figure in the history of the Indian Independence movement.
Munda’s achievements are even more remarkable for having been accomplished at a very young age. (UNI)
