JAMMU, Jan 8: A day after BJP president JP Nadda’s visit to Jammu was cancelled because of bad weather conditions, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s day-long visit to the region tomorrow has also been deferred on similar grounds.

Shah’s schedule here tomorrow was quite hectic including inauguration of projects, laying foundation stone of new ones, holding review of security situation and development works, distribution of appointment letters and visiting Dera Ki Gali in Poonch to meet families of civilians killed recently in the area.
“Shah’s visit to Jammu on Tuesday has been deferred in view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and forecast,” officials said here today.
Shah was scheduled to visit the Union Territory to attend the ‘Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra’, a Central Government programme, in Jammu and inaugurate projects worth Rs 1,379 crore, including e-buses and lay the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 2,348 crore.
He was also scheduled to undertake a review of the security and development of Jammu and Kashmir and planned to travel to Dera Ki Gali in Poonch sector and meet the families of the civilians killed recently in this area, the officials said.
He was also scheduled to distribute appointment letters to several youths on compassionate grounds in Jammu, they added.
“However, the visit is deferred in view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and forecast,” they said.
Jammu and Kashmir BJP chief Ravinder Raina also confirmed the same.
“Just been intimated that due to the uncertain weather conditions prevailing in the region, tomorrow’s (9th January) visit of the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Jammu stands cancelled,” Raina said in a post on X.
Shah was scheduled to address a massive Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra (VBSY) rally at Gulshan Ground in heart of the City tomorrow. Preparations for the rally were in full swing and large crowd was expected to gather to listen to Shah.
The VBSY has been going on in every nook and corner of Jammu and Kashmir benefitting people a lot about welfare schemes of Central and UT Governments. It will continue till January 26.
The Home Minister’s visit to Dera Ki Gali was also significant as Rajouri and Poonch districts witnessed surge in terror attacks last year with martyrdom of 19 soldiers in four incidents besides killing of seven civilians of minority community at Dhangri.
The terrorists ambushed two Army vehicles, killing five soldiers and injuring two others, at Poonch on December 21 last year.
The bodies of three civilians were found a day later in the Poonch district, not far from the spot of the day before the incident, sparking outrage.
Army chief Gen Manoj Pande rushed to Dera Ki Gali within a day of the incident. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the spot on December 27 for on spot assessment of the situation.
Following review of security situation in Rajouri and Jammu by the Defence Minister and the Lieutenant Governor on December 27, the Union Home Minister took comprehensive assessment of the scenario in Jammu and Kashmir with particular reference to Rajouri and Poonch districts on January 2 in New Delhi.
A detailed roadmap has been chalked out for elimination of terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, the officials said.
