SRINAGAR, May 22: Minister for PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma has called upon the engineers to put in their best efforts to improve the overall drinking water scenario across the Kashmir division. He said water is fundamental need of every human being and functionaries associated with provision of this essential commodity should adopt proactive and missionary approach to ensure it to all.
In view of the depleting water resources due to environmental impacts, the Minister directed the engineers to take appropriate measures to protect the water resources and improving the water table. He stressed the need for making best use of funds under sustainability component that envisages restoration of traditional water resources and developing check dams for recharging the water table.
While reviewing the functioning of the Departments of PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control at a meeting held here today under his chairmanship, the Minister said that people have great expectations from the Government and this can only be possible if everyone gives his hundred percent. He directed the field functionaries to further improve things on ground so that the benefits of schemes percolate down to the needy. He called for making everyone accountable towards his/her duties, plugging all gaps and ensuring transparency at all levels. He also stressed the need for making the system more people friendly and easy assessable to the common man.
Minister of State for PHE, Nazir Gurezi who was also present in the meeting, directed the engineers to enhance the monitoring mechanism to achieve the targets well within scheduled time. He asked for expediting the pace of progress to complete the on-going schemes in the Valley.
Commissioner/Secretary, PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Dr.Pawan Kotwal briefed the Ministers about the initiatives taken to strengthen the existing system and status of various on-going schemes. He said that both the Chief Engineers have been directed to enhance the field visits and personally monitoring the activities on ground. He said several steps have been taken by the administrative department to ensure accountability and transparency in the system.
