JAMMU, Sept 19: Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Sham Lal Sharma today asked the PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Departments to take measures for further improvement in the distribution of irrigation and drinking water network.
Chairing a meeting of the senior functionaries of the two departments convened to review the status of ongoing works, pace on restoration works at flood damaged sites, besides assessing the action on decisions taken in the previous meetings, the Minister asked for creating awareness among the public about the importance of conservation of water resources and its judicial use.
“We need to launch a massive awareness campaign to educate masses about the conservation and judicious use of water”, he said adding that this was imperative for providing safe drinking water to people of State and expand the irrigation network.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner/Secretary, PHE, I&FC, Dr Pawan Kotwal, Chief Engineer, I&FC, Varinder Badyal, Chief Engineer, PHE, K K Gupta, Chief Engineer, RTIC, H C Jerath, SE Hydraulic, Rajeev Malhotra, besides SEs/Executive Engineers of PHE, I&FC of Jammu division and other senior engineers and officers of concerned departments were also present in the meeting.
The meeting had a detailed discussion on various aspects related to the development of new PHE, I&FC schemes in the uncovered areas across Jammu division. The meeting was briefed about the action taken with regard to providing drinking water facilities to uncovered education institutions, functioning of village level water sanitation committees, multi village schemes, revenue collection, metering of establishments in private sector, installation of energy meters at PHE and Irrigation installations, pending wages of casual level works, total strength of casual level work, works taken up for the revival of traditional water bodies and ponds, water quality testing at PHE stations, construction of Jal Bhawan and functioning of communication and capacity development unit.
The Minister also reviewed the status of Surinsar, Mansar, Dansar, Nai Garh Drinking Water Supply Schemes, besides Hans Canal, Nai Garh, Veeri Pattan and Kathua Canal, under irrigation sector.
The Minister also reviewed the pace of restoration work of flood damages. He was informed by the concerned Chief Engineer about the status of restoration works as well as progress on Tawi Barriage Project. He directed the concerned engineers to complete all ongoing restoration work with judicious use of funds.
Commissioner/Secretary, PHE, I&FC, Dr Pawan Kotwal emphasised on the need of involvement of Panchs, Sarpanchs and other representatives for the functioning of village level water sanitation committees.
