SAMBA, Apr 19: President of National Mazdoor Conference (NMC), Subhash Shastri, today urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to declare ‘May Day’ as a gazetted holiday throughout the country.
Addressing a well attended rally of NMC activists here at Utter-Behni, Shastri said, “We urge the Prime Minister to declare ‘May Day’ as a gazetted holiday throughout the country Under Negotiable Instrument Act as a befitting tribute to May Day martyrs and recognizing the valuable contribution of the working class in the all-round development of the country.
Because of the May Day martyrs, the working class got their rights throughout the world and India being the largest and most vibrant democracy across the globe and frontline welfare State should also declare May 1 as gazette holiday, Shastri added.
He said that this will be a great gesture and will fulfill the most genuine and long-pending demands of the working class.
The NMC president alleged that the then Government led by V P Singh had decided to declare May Day as a gazetted holiday in the country in 1990, but the decision could not be implemented due to unknown reasons.
Pleading the cause of State Government employees and pensioners, Shastri also expressed his concern over the delay in release of 10 per cent DA due from January last and 4th installment of 6th pay commission arrears.
He also demanded immediate release of all pending dues of daily rated, casual and seasonal labourers working in various departments of the State Government.
