JAMMU, Apr 5: Dr Shazad Ahmed Malik, former Vice Chancellor and known social activist of border district Poonch, has demanded disbursal of funds lying with Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board to provide relief to the poor people who have become worst victim of 21 days nationwide lockdown due to Corona pandemic.
Dr Shazad Ahmed has written a letter to Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Union Minister of Minority Affairs who is also ex-officio Chairperson of Central Waqf Council, seeking the latter’s intervention so that funds worth millions of rupees lying with the Jammu & Kashmir Board for Muslim Specified Waqfs be used for welfare of people.
In the emailed letter dated 04/April/2020, the former VC has urged the Union Minister to open up the treasures of the Waqf Board to utilize these funds for the poor and needy people of remote, hilly and border areas of J&K UT to express solidarity with the fellow citizens in this difficult time.
Urging the minister to take a cue from other individual and religious organizations of the country that have donated whole heartedly and generously to mitigate Corona pandemic, Dr Shazad in his letter appealed, “In this hour of crisis on entire mankind, many renowned entrepreneurs , business organizations, cine stars and religious organizations have also donated generously towards Prime Ministers’ Care Fund or themselves supported the communities and I am being informed that amount worth crores is also lying with Jammu & Kashmir Board for Muslim Specified Waqfs. Therefore, I request you to direct the concerned board/administrator and officers to utilize these funds for welfare of poor people”.
The former VC informed that despite all efforts by the Government many areas especially remote, hilly and border areas of J&K UT like Rajouri, Poonch, Mendhar, Balakote, Chammb, Nowshera, Uri, Kupwara etc remain almost neglected. The poor people there need helping hand and thus it becomes the responsibility of the Waqf Board to use the funds in its possession for the welfare of the poor and vulnerable section of the society who are suffering severally due to this nation wide lock down.
