JAMMU, Mar 23: Shiv Sena’s Jammu and Kashmir unit has called for renaming the Mughal Road and Mughal Garden in the region after prominent figures in local history.
In a statement, the party suggested renaming Mughal Road, which connects Poonch-Rajouri to Kashmir, to Maharaja Gulab Singh Road after the founder of the Dogra dynasty and the first ruler of Jammu and Kashmir.
Similarly, the party proposed changing the name of Mughal Garden in Kashmir to Maharishi Kashyap Garden in honour of the sage believed to have settled the region.
In this context, the State chief of Shiv Sena, Manish Sahni, along with other Shiv Sainiks protested peacefully on the Jammu-Pathankot national highway, holding placards with slogans such as “Mughal stamp is not acceptable on prestigious places.”
Sahni emphasized that the region should not carry the legacy of Mughal rulers, highlighting the historical significance of Maharaja Gulab Singh and Maharishi Kashyap.
He also pointed out that other areas in India, like the Mughal Garden at Rashtrapati Bhavan, have already been renamed.
Sahni urged Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to approve these changes, stressing that the BJP leaders of the region should clarify their position on the matter.
Those who participated in the protest included Vikas Bakshi, Raj Singh, Shashipal, Deep Kumar, Sham Lal, Neeti Devi, Sunita Kumari, Uttam Kumar, Rohit, Om Parkash and others.
