JAMMU, Sept 11: While defense and prosecution were arguing in the Delhi fast track court to decide about the  quantum of sentence to six men who brutally gangraped and murderously assaulted a 23-year-old  paramedical student in a private bus on the roads of Delhi on the night of December 16, 2012, Shivani Cultural Society was busy in staging the play ‘Main Damini Bol Rahi Hoon’ at the K L Saigal Hall here today.
An artistic tribute to the young victim by the theater community of Jammu, the play in which the dead ‘Damini’ while giving a heart rendering account of her physical agony, torture and  helplessness in an extreme case of depravity and sexual assault on a young helpless girl who kept on pleading for mercy, also raised the pertinent issues of social and civil responsibility of all citizens in instituting suitable legal measures to ensure safety and protection to females in general in Indian society.
Displaying great variety of emotions, Neha Lakhotra in the role of ‘Damini’, through very effective portrayal of the agonies of hapless victim on the fateful night was able to completely engross the audience who watched in somber and respectful silence. She was equally scathing in raising questions about the role and double standards of the media and politicians who used the incidence that shook the conscience of the nation for their petty gains.
Directed by Vikram Sharma and Himanashu Darshan and written by Neha Lakhotra and Aaditya Bhanu, the play that successfully projected different personas of ‘Damini;’ was interjected by narrative interludes by Himanshu Darshan and Aditya Bhanu.
Balwant Thakur, the chief guest and guest of honour veteran stage and TV actor Shusham Sharma, praised the efforts of the Shivani Cultural Society for their off-beat as well as topical plays.
