SHO among 6 cops, 2 women injured as protesters turn violent

UDHAMPUR, Jan 16: SHO Udhampur among six cops and two women protesters were injured when the people who were agitating for a foot bridge over the Railway track near Satyani, turned violent and clashed with police, here today.
Following the violence, Police arrested some protesters who were released late this evening after bail.
The trouble erupted this afternoon when local residents of Dugduba Basti, Satyani Udhampur were holding a protest demonstration at Dhar Road Udhampur. They were demanding a foot bridge and fencing of the Railway track to avoid the incidents like that happened yesterday when a pedestrian was knocked to death by moving engine on the track.
Raising slogans against the railway administration and in support of their demands, the protestors blocked the National Highway 2A Dhar Road for vehicular movement from 11:30 a.m to 2:30 p.m.
As the situation turned tense in view of the road blockage, ADC Udhampur Vikas Sharma and SSP Udhampur Suleman Choudhary also rushed to the spot. When Police was trying to pacify the protesters for lifting the road blockage, a few agitating women allegedly resorted to stone pelting on the cops who also used force and cane charged the mob.
In the stone pelting and police action, SHO Udhampur Deepak Jasrotia among six cops were wounded while two women protesters also sustained injuries. Window panes of several vehicles were also got smashed in the stone pelting.
Those who were injured, included SI Vikram, Head Constable Karan Singh, Constable Mohd Faruq, Constable Mohd Ramzan and SPO Sanjya Kumar. The injured women were identified as Laxmi Devi wife of Bittu and Babli Devi wife of Om Prkash. Both are resident of Satyani.
Police arrested some protesters but released them in the late evening after bail.
