SRINAGAR, May 30: Complete shut down was observed in South Kashmir’s Shopian town today to commemorate the 5th death anniversary of Aasiya and Nilofar.
All shops and business establishments were closed in the town and traffic remained off the roads throughout the district.
People in the town took a procession after Friday prayers from historic Jama Masjid Shopian to main market and demanding justice for the victims and their families.
“We are observing black day today as two of our daughters fell prey to some savages who after sexually assaulting the girls killed them,” the protesters said.
Aasiya (17) and Neelofar (22), the two women who as per locals were allegedly raped and murdered by security forces in 2009, has gone missing on the evening of May 29 and were found dead in shallow Rambi Ara stream.
Their death kept the Kashmir Valley on boil for days together and the Shopian district held agitation for 23 days in 2009.
