Shortage of IAS, IPS Officers

Sir,
This refers to the news item ‘Shortage of over1400 IAS, 900 IPS Officers in country:Govt (DE, March 23, 2017).It is surprising that there is a shortage of over 1400 IAS, 900 IPS and 500 IFS Officers in the country, according to Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh. There is no doubt that IAS, IPS snd IFS are much  coveted services across the country and the officers of these services are considered the backbone of administration in our country. Every year thousands of aspirants for these services work hard and burn midnight oil  to crack the respective examinations conducted by UPSC but only a few manage to finally get selected. There is such a big craze for these services that a large number of candidates enroll themselves in coaching institutes which have mushroomed in big cities and small towns to crack these examinations and ensure their name in the merit holders.
In some cases, parents are so ambitious that they motivate their children  to make it their ambition to be IAS/IPS/IFS officers. So the students start preparations for these exams much earlier when they are in the secondery or senior secondery classes. It is due to the prestige and power associated with these services which attract such a huge number of candidates. But it is sad that many states in our country are facing huge shortage of these officers. The result is that  such a persistent shortage affects governance in the country and those states where there is maximum shortage of officers of these cadres are worst affected.
Therefore, it is imperative that  steps are taken so that the gap between the available number of officers of these cadres and the numbers required is narrowed down to bring efficiency and good governance in our country.Prompt action also needs to be taken for holding selection committee meetings for promotion of State services officers to All India Services to overcome the shortage of these services.
Yours etc…
