Defence Research and Development is a crucial and prestigious organization with immensely important role in bolstering countries defence potential and security management. Unfortunately, this crucial organization has been starved of scientists to the extent that at present no fewer than 2776 positions of scientists are lying vacant in the organization. The reason is that the authorization sanctioned in 2001 was only for 9th and 10th plan project. The nation expected that in pursuance of the concept of indigenization of defence equipment and weaponry, DRDO would be provided more than required wherewithal to achieve the targets. This has not happened. But the brighter side of the case is that according to written reply of the Defence Minister in the Lok Sabha, the Cabinet note envisages augmentation of additional 4966 posts, including 2776 posts of scientists for DRDO. Recruitment to 2,776 posts of scientists will be spread over five phases and 555 scientists would be recruited in the first phase.
Though belated, the decision of the Cabinet has to be welcomed and it has come at a time when there is great pressure on Defence Ministry that we need advanced weaponry and war equipment in the light of increased hostilities by our two neighbours. We cannot remain complacent about our security and at the same time we cannot continue to depend on purchase of very expensive defence equipment from foreign countries. India has to become self sufficient in most of her defence requirements.
