The Advisor to Governor is on the spot when he expressed his concern over depleting forest cover in the State. The decline started with the onset of militancy in the State. The forest mafia taking advantage of the deteriorating law and order situation in the Valley indulged in ruthless cutting of trees without caring for the consequences. Besides, the growing population in the vicinity of forests is also to a great extent responsible for the mess. Large chunks of land is cleared for cultivation of food and human settlements. Then there are forest fires which play havoc with this green gold. Every year thousands of trees perish in raging fires. The consequences of all these causes are emerging rapidly before us. Man-animal conflict is assuming horrendous proportions in the State. ‘Wildlife is on uextinction Medicinal herbs are disappearing. So it has become necessary that we protect our forests.
