NEW DELHI, Aug 23: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said here today that, like in other parts of India, the Sikh community is making a substantial contribution in the Northeast as well.
Dr Jitendra Singh was speaking to a Sikh delegation led, among others, by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President Manjeet Singh, Sardar R.P. Singh, former MLA and Manjinder Singh Sirsa, MLA who called on him to discuss issues related to the community, exclusively in the context of the Northeast.
Lauding the role of Sikh community, Dr Jitendra Singh said, the most appreciable feature of the community is that wherever they have settled, they have fully adopted themselves to the culture and language of the region, while at the same time, continuing to uphold the traditional ethos of the Sikh Panth. He said, it is remarkable to note that now we have sections of Sikh community referred to, for example, as Assamese Sikhs or Naga Sikhs. However, wherever they have chosen to settle down, they have enriched the place with their unique traits of hard work and entrepreneurship, he added.
The members of delegation also submitted a memorandum to Dr Jitendra Singh about an issue relating to the State of Sikkim and requested for the transfer of “Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji” back to “Sarva Dharam Sthal” in Gurudongmar Lake. They referred to Sikkim Government Notification dated 6th November 1992 to this effect.
Dr Jitendra Singh gave a patient hearing to the members of delegation and said, he would take up the issue with the authorities in Gangtok and expressed the confidence that the issue will be amicably closed very soon. He appealed to the members of delegation to continue their healthy initiatives for nationalism, communal harmony and mutual brotherhood.
