Sometime back, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the plan of simultaneous Vidhan Sabha and Lok Sabha elections. This idea was later on endorsed by the President of India by saying that ‘ the Election Commission can also put in their idea and efforts on holding the polls together and that will be highly beneficial’. This move is supposed to save huge expenses which incur on holding elections in India.
However, it may said here that money is mere consideration here. The simultaneous plan, it is apprehended, may prove a dangerous idea against federalism and in support of ‘pan-India’ parties whose agendas would typically dominate in an election cycle.
This idea was floated earlier also but it had no takers at that time. Keeping its loopholes in view, one perceives that this time also it has no takers as it has not generated much enthusiasm among political parties and the voters.
