Singapore Deputy PM’s term extended as IMF committee head

SINGAPORE, Dec 19: Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam has accepted a request by the International Monetary Fund’s policy steering committee to extend his term as chairman by another year.
Tharman was appointed as chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC) for three years in March 2011, and was the first Asian to be appointed to the position.
With this extension, he would remain as the committee’s chairman until March 22, 2015.
The members of the IMFC view Tharman’s strong leadership as valuable in the committee’s deliberations, the IMF said.
The continuity of his leadership would also help to ensure that all members’ views were taken into account, including with respect to significant ongoing reforms, the fund said in a statement yesterday.
The IMFC is the policy advisory committee of the IMF and deliberates on principal policy issues facing the IMF and the international monetary and financial system.
The IMFC has 24 members, comprising finance ministers and Central Bank Governors. (AGENCIES)
