SRINAGAR, Sept 3: The situation in the Kashmir valley following the demise of hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani is absolutely under control and people have cooperated with the authorities, Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh said today.
The JK Police chief also said the decision on relaxing restrictions on communications would be taken at a review meeting “soon”.
“The situation is absolutely under control, not even a single incident occurred in the last two days. People cooperated and security forces are working with great restraint. I congratulate people…For keeping peace everywhere,” Singh told reporters in Baramulla district of North Kashmir.
To a question about relaxations in the restrictions on mobile telephony and internet, the DGP said, “We will soon take a review (of the situation) and I think we will restore it soon.”

The authorities imposed restrictions on movement and assembly of people and suspended mobile Internet services after Geelani, 91, died at his home in Srinagar on Wednesday night after a prolonged illness.
Asked whether the situation in Afghanistan would have an impact in Kashmir, DGP Singh said, “There is nothing to worry about, everything is fine.”
Asked about the reports of some youths from the Valley joining the Taliban, the police chief said, “This is totally wrong and fake news.”
“Such fake news on social media is a malicious propaganda by Pakistan and pro-Pakistan agents. Everything is fine. The youth are playing cricket, volleyball, rugby. Don’t you see those pictures? Every child here wants to secure his future and no one is going that way,” he said.
Addressing the joint officers’ meetings, the DGP stressed for alertness and said that no room should be given to any anti-peace element to create any disturbance. He emphasized for elaborate security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident and directed for taking stern action against the rumour mongers. He said that besides monitoring the law and order situation strict surveillance be maintained on the mischief mongers and Over Ground Workers (OGWs).
The DGP said that JKP along with other security forces has faced different situations during the last three decades to provide peaceful environment for the people. He called for strengthening relations with the people. He said that cooperation of the people with the forces has helped in maintaining peace and these relations should be strengthened at all levels to further consolidate the peace mission in J&K.
He stressed upon the officers to ensure synergy at different levels to make the measures more fruitful. He said that the supervisory officers should regularly brief deployments in their respective areas to bring further improvement in the day-to-day functioning. He said that dedication, expertise and adoption of latest modern gadgets would bring improvements in public service.
The officers representing different forces and agencies put forth their suggestions for maintaining peace in the Valley. They also apprised the DGP regarding the security measures put in place to meet the possible security challenges and ensure the safety and security of the people.
Singh along with the senior officers also visited various areas of these districts to take a first-hand appraisal of the deployments on ground.
